There’s a House inside my Mummy: A sweet and comforting story in preparation for welcoming a new baby

Last year we were blessed to welcome Theodore into our family. He’s 18 months old now and not really a baby any more, but growing from 2 to 3 kids was quite a transition for us all. When I was first pregnant Angus (2) vaguely understood the concept but Ivy (5) had no end of questions about what was happening and what would happen. So we read lots of ‘baby on the way’ books to prepare them for the significant emotional and physical change of welcoming another person into our home, and to help them understand the many changes that happened to me.

One of the first we read and a huge favourite for both kids is There’s a House inside my Mummy by Andreae and Vanessa Cabban. It’s a lovely story of a little boy explaining about the ‘house’ inside his mummy and the baby that is growing there.

“There’s a house inside my Mummy,

Where my little brother grows,

Or maybe it’s my little sister

No one really knows.

My Daddy says I lived there too

When I was being made,

But I don’t remember very much

About it I’m afraid”

It’s a sweet and comforting book that covers the basics like the baby sleeping in a ‘bath’, why Mummy’s tummy grows and why Mummy is so tired. The concepts are simple enough for very young kids and are a great conversation starter for older kids who have lots of questions.

There’s a House inside my Mummy is a great read it before you need it book, an easy starting point for all those new baby questions, and would make a wonderful gift for expectant siblings.
